Immediate success

I have a friend who has created a unique way to develop leaders. He brings groups of eight to twelve persons from diverse careers to work on a challenge. He has found that the key to ongoing success is for the group to achieve some almost immediate success. It is not vital that the result be earth shattering ,but it builds success and the ability to think wider and take risks. The same holds true for your bucket list. Rarely does anyone bolt totally out of their comfort zone but small steps that work build confidence and fortify the courage to continue.

Why the Anger?

It appears that everyone is angry .Republicans are angry,Democrats are angry,Independents are angry and those with no political affiliation are angry. We well know that anger is a secondary emotion so what are the real sources of this anger? I believe the prime veins are a sense of powerlessness and frustration.Despite the group or political leaning people are tirde of do noting politics. Unfortunately this anger blocks reason, and is used against all the groups. Politicians live and die with playing he blaming game, and so our anger is unfocused and unlike the reaction to 9/11 we achieve no significant change by battling citizens with diverse opinions.

We have so much in common in our aspirations for our country, but we lose impetus and power because our anger blocks the road to common ground. Many of my friends differ at first glance with me on a host of issues but there is not one doubt that if we were in charge at the end of the day we would find understanding and agreement. Our separateness caused by the system is the barrier that must be crossed. Politicians are not today ,tomorrow or ever going to be serious about Infrastructure, fair taxes, stemming violence, creating freedom and justice for all despite race, religion, belief or sexual preference. It.It is up to us.It does not say that we are to be led by the blind and the political deaf.It says we are are a government of the people,by the people and for the people.

9/11 part2

It seems incredulous to believe that so many years have passed since that indelible mark on our hearts and souls.Watching those magnificent towers crumbling to the ground created a Grand Canyon of sorrow around the nation. Ordinary people went to work on that brilliant day never realizing that this would be there last moment on earth. The terror that hatred spawned robbed so many of their loved ones ,and in many respects stole innocence from all of us.We could not conceive that this could happen anywhere in America.
The pain is ongoing for many families and closure is a nice concept because life must go on for those who mourn ,but grief does not have a calendar. To remember the fallen is noble. but to take them with us in the quest for building a more perfect union is profound. Our sorrow must be turned into action, and to embrace their memories by making our neighborhoods towns and cities places where community is vibrant, and the core of the principles on which this land was built. We are not powerless, and digging deeply into how we felt toward every American on that horrific day will allow us to stop shouting at each other, and embrace our differences in dialogue not slogans.

9/11

In two days we will memorialize one of the most tragic days in American history. It was a day when not a single person focused on the gender, race or sexual preference of the victims. We did not break into categories whose lives mattered more than others. Those heroic cops and firemen who put their lives on the line did not for one second care about the political or religious beliefs of those trapped in those infernos. We as members of the public shed our petty differences and held each other up,and there were no strangers. We were Americans not Democrats,Republicans or other. There were no litmus tests because we were bound with an intense love for country that washed away all that separates us..We did not think in terms of walls to separate us, or which of our citizens deserved full rights. It was us against any who would harm us, and we made room in our hearts for difference .

That magnificent melding into an iron love has been fractured since that horrific day and now we have so many check lists that determine who we support and which causes merit the fullness of civic rights. We listen not to voices that seek harmony and love ,but rather to the most strident. Our ears may just as well be stuffed with cotton because what only gets through are the messages that support our iron clad positions.I wonder what those good souls who died that day in New York.DC and Pennsylvania would think of our divisive postures?

Bob Gussin

I learned many things from my dear friend Bob Gussin but none was more important than his attitude toward failure. Bob was the head of research for Johnson and Johnson and his outward demeanor rarely gave off the reality that he was passionate about positive outcomes. Despite this drive he realized that the process of research is a series of hurdles and many failures. He never allowed his speech to personalize the inevitable failures ,and always re framed the situation into learning opportunities.
His re framing almost always produced valuable information in continuing the search for meaningful breakthroughs.

If you haven’t failed at something you will probably be canonoized or you just play everything too close to the vest. You are not a failure, and do not deny the failure, but do not allow it to own your present and future. Be like Bob,reframe it learn from it,and then forge ahead

Immigration

The image of that little Syrian boy on the beach conjured up memories that torment me.Starting in 1971 I interviewed survivors of the Holocaust and their stories were so horrendous that they live with me to this day. Each story was different but the pattern of being hunted with no place to go was ever present. One Viennese Jew told me that he dragged his children through forests, rivers and smuggled them under truck tarpaulins. He said their deaths left him scarred for life ,but what haunted him was their innocent faces looking to him and his wife for answers and assurance.

We are embroiled in a war of words about immigration and I understand the passions but I am reminded that many who wish to come to our shores are desperate, and more than statistics. They are often people who are fleeing a Stalin,Hitler ,Assad or the countless monsters that hunt, harm and kill innocents like that little boy.We may not be able to give them hope or shelter but we owe every man woman and child the respect of valuing them as human beings.

Labor Day

We are about to celebrate Labor Day and we would do well to acknowledge the countless number of people who everyday make our lives easier. When I turn the light on I honestly don’t think about the person on a pole restringing a broken wire. The morning muffin did not magically appear at the Bakery, some person while I was sleeping baked it.The screeching sound of a fire engine racing somewhere is one of many that happens every day all over this country. If we were to actually identify those behind the scenes of our lives that make it happen most times without a hitch we would realize the value of every person and occupation. This morning I raise my coffee cup to them, and all of you that are doing your part to have your labor work for others.

Pope Francis

I recently have done radio interviews ,and have a few others in the coming weeks that focus on Pope Francis’ visit to America..Once in a blue moon a pope comes along that is very different than his predecessors. Pope John xxlll was thought to be a nice old man that would maintain the status quo ,but he opened the window and had a council that shook the foundation. He and Peter were tied for the popes that I most loved and respected.Pope Francis has tied them for my admiration. He has done and said things that are so foreign to traditional pope behavior. He immediately openly said there would be a no tolerance policy toward clerical pedophilia. The Vatican bank which had been a scandal for years was condemned, and the books were literally opened. He told members of the Roman Curia that the suffered from spiritual Alzheimer’s He reminded the clergy and the laity that what they did on Monday was more important than what they
did on Sunday.

I have differences with him namely on the role of women in the church, contraception and priestly celibacy ,but I applaud his humanity and openness to the fact that many roads lead to heaven. He has opened his arms to Atheists and members of every faith. For me the core of Christianity are the words spoken by Christ in the sermon on the Mount. I see in Pope Francis a pastor, not a king ,but one who lives fully those words.

Cops

I was horrified last year when I saw a cop shoot a man in the back who was running for his life, and there were other incidents like the one in Baltimore that made me wonder about the abuse of power We must always stand up for those who have been abused by the system. However, we must stand also for the men in Blue who everyday provide us with the safety and service that keeps us able to function most times without fear or worry. I have know many cops in Westfield,Jersey City and New York and have seen numerous acts of heroism and kindness. It is time for all of us to stand together.Yes we muse weed out the few who use the badge to abuse others, but we must also honor the majority of cops who need to know that we have their backs a well as all of our citizens. I weep for those who were killed without justification, but there are also tears for the cop who was murdered yesterday.,
