Shame

The incident with Ray Rice and his fiancée in an elevator is more than a blemish on him and all who participated in the lenient treatment he received, it is a cancer. It is not only women who shout decry this situation but every male that believes that we can no longer tolerate rape, domestic violence and any form of abuse towards others for any reason. The NFL officials, the policeman at the scene and the prosecutors should all be openly reviled for their treatment of this case. A two game suspension? That brutal attack deserved a jail sentence, but because of the fact that he was a star athlete the punishment was a joke. It is time that as a man I publicly come forward and say”this good old boy” does not believe in the sexist hogwash that still permeates much of society. Domestic violence can no longer be swept under the rug ,and the culprit must not skate because he has athletic talent or can buy his way out. Shame on a system that allowed Ray Rice to be free and walking the streets today.

Trilogy

What kind of masochist starts scoping out the third part of a Trilogy before the second novel is actually published? Seriously the task of applying for the Berlin fellowship has spawned all sorts of ideas for the third book. Because the ultimate goal is to present a story which enables contemporary Jews and Christians to have a deeper understanding of their common heritage the early split between them must be defined. Two of the main characters will be Pope Joseph the first who ironically resembles our current Pope Francs and an yet unnamed Biblical scholar who helps us understand that anti-Judaism was a fertile ground for Nazi anti-Semitism. Ironically I wrote about Pope Joseph 1 before Pope Francis appeared on the scene. Pleas send me lots of karma today because I am writing the hardest part of the Proposal.

Berlin Proposal

Hope to finish the Berlin proposal this week and have decided that my topic for research will be the relationship between Christianity and the Holocaust.I have been stunned while doing research for both novels how the Jews have been the object of persecution almost from the beginning by official church policies. This wealth of academic data has literally never made it’s way to the ordinary Jewish .and Christian communities and has been explored primarily by scholars. It is my intention to make this the main theme for the third novel, and to propose that at the Center I would write this book as well as develop a series of presentations and short videos exploring the past and proposing future implications for change..

Rob Hess

Walking through the park yesterday afternoon I was struck by the number of homeless men and women who spend all day in the park waiting for the soup kitchen to open. My immediate reaction to this visual was to think of my good friend Rob Hess who devoted his life to providing housing for so many in Philadelphia and New York. His tireless energy and brilliance created opportunities for thousands of lost souls who needed shelter and human services. Rob never merely shrugged his shoulders at the enormity of the challenge but rather he helped both mayors and the community understand that all the services ,though well intentioned, will not work unless the persons have a place to live. Rob is no linger physically here, but the lessons he taught are the monuments that will solve homelessness in the future.

No real villains

One memory that has leaped out at me was the involvement of Jack Murphy and I in a pilot program after the Newark riots. The relationship between the adolescents and the police was at an all time low, and both groups were very distrustful of each other. Because our parish had a relationship with the parish in Newark we were able to gather a group of volunteer teen agers and cops for a trial balloon experience. For nine weeks we had the individuals have face to face contact with the other group’s world. The cops saw things in the projects which were foreign to their lives. One cop was deeply moved by the chicken wire placed over a crib to prevent rat bites of a baby. The teen agers saw cops with their children and out of uniform. Together they performed acts of mutual charity and engaged with zest in a series of team sports. It was not magic wand time but at the end they could never see each other in the narrow view that had preceded the riots.

It’s a Wonderful Life

Preparing the materials required for the fellowship in Berlin has been like writing an
autobiography. So many times and places that had fallen into the crevices of my brain came bolting out with a clarity that surprised me. In the course of this work many of you appeared because you at some point were or still are connected to my personal and professional life.I could see the faces of students at Trinity High school and the events that occurred at Johnson and Johnson. Over and over often with sharp and wonderful memories the people and places became resonant again. If nothing else the whole process is reminiscent of one of my favorite movies”It’s a Wonderful Life.”I am not George Bailey, but I can certainly say that the revue proves that I have had a “Wonderful Life.”

Publicity

I have found that the best way to obtain speaking engagements is for someone in my network to have a connection to a Synagogue,Church,Community organization,Bookstore, book club or any other venue. In order to make that connection easier for anyone who tries to assist me, I would be happy to send you a copy of” Hitler’s Priest” that you could give to the liaison of the organization. Just send me your address and I will happily send one on its way.

The first three chapters of “The Cross or the Swastika” are available to anyone that sends me their name and email. You are all my publicity agents ,so if you feel that someone you know would enjoy my work this is an opportunity for them to preview part of the book

Semester in Berlin

I am applying for a three month scholarship to further my work on the Holocaust in Berlin. The competition is ferocious and there will be over ten thousand applicants for the twenty slots. The Center is housed ironically on Lke Wansee the place where the Nazis formalized the”Final Solution.”I am entering this with my eyes open and will give the proposal my best shot. The center was originally owned by a Jewish banker who was forced to sell it to the Nazis. He went to the United States became wealthy again and the villa was returned to him after the war. In the 1990s the American Ambassador convinced the family to turn it into an American center for scholars. My belief is nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Red Herrings

I believe that beneath the slogans and the labels the majority of Americans want action in the areas of the economy, immigration, education and a host of other issues that effect directly their lives. These are covered by red Herrings such as “class warfare”and slogans which may make us feel good, but at the end of the day nothing changes. .What would happen if reasonable people instead of merely keeping distance from each other decided that they would dialogue and find common ground? Who do you know that is not concerned with the physical status of our bridges, roads and tunnels? Is there anyone in your circle of life that does not want to leave a safer world for their children or grandchildren? Are there no ways that we can deal fairly with our immigration challenge? The government has shown us that today they are unwilling and unable to meet these challenges but we can mobilize, listen to each other and find common ground.

Artie T and his heroes

Just when you thought the days of David slaying Goliath would never appear again a group of courageous people showed us the power of commitment to an ideal. The employees of Market Basket against all odds have restored the CEO who built a culture that proved that treating people as valued employees in the long run is good for customers, workers and the community. At great personal risk, and certainly with only a minimal chance of success, the employees risked everything to support not only Artie T but a way of life that is rapidly vanishing. In all my years as a corporate consultant I have never seen such a marvelous case study. The powerful who treat employees as commodities and care little about culture and only their bottom lines could learn much from this event. I doubt that some will even glance at this outcome, and will snicker knowing that it has no effect on their style of leadership. However, for many of us this staggering outcome has relit the belief that the few collectively who have courage and the guts to go against the odds can still make significant changes in society.
