Worthiness

I had a terrific professor in grad school George Vlahos who taught a very clear distinction between self worth and worthiness. Self worth fluctuates and how we see ourselves depends on so many variables. Our job may be difficult, the roof leaks, my neighbor is complain about my tree dropping leaves in her yard and a host of other variable daily happenings make the feelings volatile. On a scale of one to ten during the week we can go from zero to ten in a nanosecond. The difference is that worthiness is a constant. Our uniqueness as an individual has a value that can never be diminished. He believed that the very fact of our being a unique person endowed us with deserving love, respect and meaning. All the self worth up and downs never change that fact.

Envy

So much energy is often spent on comparing ourselves to others and wishing we had what they have. Certainly alright to want wonderful things but always being one down by focusing on what we don’t have blinds us to what we do have. Envy can be debilitating and despite what we see we know almost nothing about those we envy. Their concerns, fears and challenges are often beyond our envy and so I suggest we turn our attention to the value and uniqueness of who we are and what gifts we possess.

The Mosaic

As one of his teaching assistants I heard many lectures that Viktor Frankl gave to graduate students at the International University. One that sticks with me is his. talk on the value of every human life. He asked the audience to picture a giant mosaic made up of literally a million pieces of tile. If one of the tiles was missing the mosaic would still be beautiful but it would be incomplete. Each of us is a tile in the mosaic of many other lives and without our caring the lives of others are incomplete. His conclusion was that we are vital and when our role becomes apparent.then we realize that greatness lies in service

Carpe Diem

Everyone goes through periods in their lives when engulfed in activities and responsibilities they fall into the trap of” someday”It would be wonderful if “someday “was guaranteed but those of us who have been around awhile know there are no guarantees that tomorrow will be a sure thing.” Carpe Diem” is not just a slogan, it is a reality that we should embrace.Today is the day that is available and we should seize it with joy and vigor.

50th Reunion

Had breakfast with a nurse who had just come from the 50th reunion of the Freedom bus riders who went to Mississippi . She told me that the group had aged well ,and their commitment to Civil Rights for all in this country was as strong as the days when they boarded those buses. At one point in the festivities one person started to sing “We shall Overcome” and everyone joined in .I still marvel at the courage those persons had, and they were largely responsible for the changes that woke up the American conscience.

Wisdom

The best thing about a national conference is the chance to hear great leaders share their wisdom. The former head of all of the Disney functions was funny ,insightful and had the audience in the palm of his hands. Included in many of his gems was the reminder that all the time you think you have may be very limited. He said he looked at his forty five year old son and humorously said ‘How did you get to be so old. “It goes by in a flash and the now is all we have. I was also very taken by his statement that “I was successful because I always knew my primary job was to create a terrific environment. “My chief responsibility was to create an environment where all could be successful and respected “That is a job that we all have, to create loving environments to help others be successful and respected.

Purpose.Power and Passion

Heard a brilliant talk by Bev Malone the CEO of the National League for Nursing yesterday. She based it on three words, purpose, power and passion. I take purpose to really be another word for meaning. For each of us there is a least one meaning in our life. Something or someone that gives us purpose and roots us. It can be insignificant to the world, but in our eyes it gives us the zest, energy and power to forge ahead. This in turn is fueled by passion that wonderful source of inspiration that makes the meaning something that burns in our heart and souls. Never underestimate your purpose, power and passion because it is there in every life. I am sure that most if not all of you have found it ,if not search again because you will find and embrace it.

Berlin Proposal

Title of Research Proposal:
Historical research: Catholic Anti Judaism spawns Nazi anti-Semitism: The Relationship between the History of the Roman Church and the Holocaust.
Summary Paragraph: This research proposal will study the strong and explosive connection between the Roman Church and its history of anti-Judaism which contributed to Nazi anti-Semitism and the Holocaust (Shoah). There is a tremendous amount of research which has documented that the Roman Church’s anti-Judaism was a contributing factor to Nazi anti-Semitism. However these data have rarely been available to the local congregations of Christian churches and synagogues. Using fictional characters, Hitler’s Priest (Tagliareni, 2012) and The Cross and the Swastika (Tagliareni, 2014), have portrayed some of the historical issues which confronted both communities during the holocaust. As a result of the publication of these two books, some Christians and Jews have reached a greater understanding of the insidious historical events leading to the holocaust. The intention of this proposal is to further explore how the separation occurred and how a greater understanding of the roots of the separation will lead to ecumenical opportunities for the future. It is an assumption that specifying and admitting these prejudices, by creating a plot and characters as part of the final book of the trilogy, will provide not only a glimpse of the past but will reinforce the conviction that both groups are historically Semites. There is much more in common between Christians and Jews, that that which separates them. Deliverables will be the novel, five short videos and the essential components for a national speaking tour.
